Evaluate 2 - Data Instruction & Analysis

Image 1: This image shows enrollment in three courses assigned, when classes start and end, and how many students are enrolled in each section.

Image 2: The teacher can see the student type, whether they've completed an orientation module or not, if they've dropped, and whether or not each student plans to take a state standardized test  (EOC).  Specific student names, parent contact info, and other data are available right in one place for you.

Image 3:  The communication log is a way for teachers to see how stakeholders can be contacted.  Some systems automate this process with computer generated calls and emails and automatically log those. Different systems may require the teacher to manually track communication.

Image 4: This communication image relates to a student who performed well in a course.  While it would be easy to refrain from contacting stakeholders in this situation, this teacher made an effort to send the parents good news.  An excellent practice for maintaining stakeholder communication and interest in a student's mastery of material and progression of the program.

Image 5:  The next image is discussing when students access the material.  It shows page views by student and date accessed.  The reports provide the teacher data regarding student progress and whether he or she is steadily progressing through the class or trying to complete right before the deadline.

Image 6:  The reporting tools inside a LMS are not just for teachers.  Students should learn how to utilize these tools.  They can monitor their own progress.   All students should be able to access their information.  They should be able to see their grades as well as feedback from the teacher.  Teachers at the beginning should spend time discussing with students how to access this important information.

Image 7:  This is a snapshot of information found in a gradebook.  The student can see grades in a category but also comments from the teacher.

Image 8:  This shows a quiz a student has taken.  The instructor allowed access to the missed questions so the student can review.

Image 9: The next image is a dropbox where students can submit files.  It shows what their scores are.  The student can click to see more detailed feedback to better understand where to improve.

Teachers can look at those students who are not performing well and see when they are working and completing their assignments. The teacher may choose to be of assistance and guide them along until they get the handle of an online classroom.  I think the most important use for data is to see if the students are making progress toward the standards being taught.  Teachers may give a different type of assessment or an additional assessment to those that are not mastering the standard, giving them another opportunity to show they have been retaught and can now master the standard.

Instructors who use the data of their students to see where their students are performing have the advantages over instructors who do not utilize that data.  They are able to see what skills their students need and are able to group them and make teaching more focused.  If you are not looking at data then you could possibly be teaching something your students may already know therefore wasting instruction time.
