Evaluate 1 - Summative Assessments

Unit assessment

The validity of an assessment is questioning what was taught.  Did it measure what was taught?  Reliability is looking at the results and are they consistent.  We have always know that when making an assessment, you should always keep in mind the end results.  We need to look at make sure you are testing the standards that you are supposed to be teaching.  After the test is given, the teacher must take the data and determine if the test was a reliable test or not.  To control the security of an assessment, you could set a time limit that is strict and as short as possible. You should also draw from a question bank with more than twice as many questions as the assessment gives any one student. You should also decide if students will be allowed to go back to previous questions or offer multiple attempts at the assessment.

After the assessment is given and the results are disaggregated, you could determine the validity and reliability. If you see some common mistakes you should take the time to go back and review and make sure the students understand the material.  I like using Google Forms because it gives you a sheet that shows all the responds from the form.  It gives you a time stamp with each student that took the test and their answers. That is so nice as a teacher. It is time saving as well.  Teachers can look at the information for common mistakes and reteach what many missed of the same question.
