Communicate - Synchronous Sessions
Artifact: Create an outline or lesson plan of a 30 minute synchronous session which you would facilitate. What activities would you include? What transitions are needed? How might you use the session as a formative assessment? How would your session build a learning community among your students?
Synchronous Learning allows instructors to facilitate discussions, lectures, work collaboratively with a small group, or meet individually with students. It is a lot like being in a classroom, but at your location of choice. Students and the teacher can communicate like you are there. This is a great way to communicate with them and actually see if they understand the skills being taught. Students can communicate with the teacher if she chooses to use features like screen sharing, chat boxes, blackboard and many more. The following are guidelines to use a synchronous session successfully.
1. Plan all sessions and keep them simple and focused on the topic.
2. Have a practice session in which students have an opportunity to become more familiar with the technology. Train students how to make use of the synchronous session environment (for example, microphone, chat box, etc…) and the conventions of this means of instruction. Demonstrate how attendees appropriately secure the presenter’s attention or ask questions.3. Arrive early to sessions to prepare for the sessions.4. Load all content (images, audio, video, slideshow presentations, etc…) well in advance and be sure that content is accessible and clear. Perform necessary checks on audio, video, and bandwidth settings.5. Have a backup plan (emergency plan). Losing an internet connection can happen to anyone so relay an alternative plan to all.6. Ask participants to also perform a check of their headphone, microphones, video, etc as they are joining the session.7. Helping to reduce interruptions during the session as students are not always using the same computer.8. Focus on discussions and lessons that are engaging. Always remember that technology is merely a means to facilitate instruction, promoting the exchange of ideas and information, rather than the central feature of the session.9. Be aware of time as well as participants’ various learning styles.10. Be concise. A session should not drag on for hours with the instructor lecturing. Especially since we will be working with primary students.11. Vary your learning activities (lecture, games, practice assessments, discussion, video, student presentations and enrichment).
